vivax, ovale, malariae, falciparum
Which types of malaria can resolve spontaenously?
vivax and ovale, recovery can be spontaneous in 2-6 weeks, but can be repeated infections
Which type of malaria is the most complex?
falciparum - can cause cerebral malaria
What is the disease characteristics of malariae malaria?
72 hour fever cycles
chronic
can cause glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome in kids
How is malaria transmitted?
By female anopholes mosquito becoming infected with infective sporozoites in salivary gland
What is the disease cycle of malaria?
Sporozoites are taken up by hepatocytes and multiple into merozoites. After a few days hepatocytes rupture releasing merozoites into blood where they are taken up by erythrocytes
How would you treat malaria?
uncomplicated - chloroquine, doxycycline
complicated/falciparium - quinine IV
What are the symptoms of malaria?
FEVER
malaise, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea

How do you test for malaria?
thick and thin blood films - 3
light microscopy
