What does CDC stand for
Center for Disease Control and Prevention

- Originated w/malaria and war
- founded during WW2 as Office of Malaria Control in War Areas
- Agency charged w/eradicating malaria in the south around military bases especially
- ran mosquito abatement programs and publicity campaigns
US Army and Malaria
- broadcasted anti-malaria jingles on radio
- distributed cartoons and “pinup calendars” encouraging troops to cover up and use repellent
When was Malaria Eredicated and who was responsible?
1951 and US Army and the CDC
Transmission cycle
1) uninfected female mosquito at dusk/night goes looking for target to suck blood to allow her eggs to develop
2) if the host is infected w/malaria then the mosquito is now infected
3) the infected mosquito doesn’t digest the malaria instead it maintains the malaria in its saliva
4) When the mosquito comes into contact w/next host for blood, the saliva is transferred giving the new host malaria
Symptoms of Malaris
Weak, chills/fever
Is malaria found in the United States Today?
yes, but travelers and immigrants bring in the parasite
