List some signs and symptoms of malaria infection.
fever, sweating, rigors, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, general weakness, haemolytic anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, orthostatic hypertension, hypoglycaemia, to kidney failure, liver failure, convulsions, coma, death.
Describe the erythrocyte cycle of malaria infection.
Sporozoites released from mosquito when bites.
Sporozoites travel to hepatocytes where they develop into merozoites.
Merozoite ruptures out of hepatocytes and invade RBC.
12h later form merozoite forms a ring.
36h later develops into trophozoite.
44h later multiplies into schizont.
48h RBC rupture and release of merozoites which are able to reinfect.
List some of the prevention methods for malaria.
Wear protective clothing, long sleeves and trousers, use a bed net, insect repellent, mosquito proof homes with screens and insecticides, prophylactic drugs: doxycycline, chloroquine, primaquine.
