General Symptoms of malaria?
Malaise, splenomegaly, fever, headache, jaundice
Blood findings malaria
Normocytic normochormic anaemia
High LDH due to haemolysis
What are the types of non falciparum malaria?
Ovale
Vivax (most common)
Knowlesi
Malariae
What symptoms are typically seen with ovale and vivax?
Swinging fevers over 48 hours, can cause relapsing disease
Which malaria causes swinging fever every 72 hours?
Malariae
What is the testing required for Malaria?
Thick and thin blood films
>5% parasitosis is poor prognosis
or
antigen detection test
What are the testing requirements for blood films?
If first test is negative need to repeat every 24 hours to make sure if negative
What treatment is recommended?
If is chloroquine-sensitive then WHO recommend either an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) or chloroquine
ACT can not be used in pregnancy
what is treatment recommendation for Ovale and vivax?
should be given primaquine following acute treatment with chloroquine to destroy liver hypnozoites and prevent relapse
