Making Salts Flashcards
Which salts are insoluble?
Most carbonates except sodium, potassium and ammonium carbonates
Barium sulfate, calcium sulfate and silver chloride
What does soluble mean?
It dissolves in water
What does insoluble mean?
It doesn’t dissolve in water
What are bases?
Bases are substances that neutralise acids ( alkali’s and are soluble bases)
What is an alkali, a soluble or insoluble base?
Soluble
If the salt you want to make is insoluble, what type of reaction do you need?
You need a precipitation reaction, a reaction that produces a precipitate
What is a precipitate?
A fine solid
What do you need to make a soluble salt?
A filter
What does the outcome of the salt depend on?
The salt depends on the acid used
Some salts are soluble, which are these?
Sodium , potassium, ammonium, nitrates, most chlorides except silver chloride, most sulfates except barium and calcium sulfate
Sodium, ammonium and potassium carbonates
