Making Salts Flashcards
Salt
A salt is made by the neutralisation of an acid with a base.
Sulphuric acid
40cm3 and then pour into beaker
Sulphuric acid
Heat beaker with bunsen burner.
Base
Any material that will neutralise an acid and form a salt.
Copper oxide
Add excess copper oxide to sulphuric acid.
Copper oxide and sulphuric acid
Chemical reaction-forms copper sulfate
Liquid turns boue
Copper oxide to be removed with water
So crystals are pure
Copper oxide to be filtered
Filter paper folded twice to make a cone. Put into funnel. Pour copper sulfate solution.
Crystals need to be dry by
Evaporating water
Where does the water need to be evaporated?
In an evaporating basin
Where does the evaporating basin need to be heated?
Over a beaker of boiling water. The bunsen burner goes underneath the beaker.
How does the evaporation work?
As the water boils the steam will heat the bottom of the evaporating basin and the water from the crystals will evaporate.
