a compound that forms when an acid reacts with a metal element or compound
- hydrogen atoms of acid are replaced by atoms of the metal element

sodium chloride NaCl
sodium atom(Na) has replaced the hydrogen of hydrochloric acid

two products - salt and hydrogen
for example:
zinc + sulfuric acid → zinc sulfate + hydrogen
magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen

reacting an acid with a base
products = salt + water
for example:
sodium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid → sodium chloride + water
copper oxide + nitric acid → copper nitrate + water
