Making Salts Flashcards
What is Salt ?
A Salt is any compound formed by the neutralisation of an acid by a base
The name of the salt has 2 parts. The first part comes from the metal, metal oxide or metal carbonate. The second part comes from the acid.
Which acid is used to make salt that have names ending in sulfate ?
Sulfuric acid
Sulfuric acid reacts with metals , alkalis and carbonate and metal oxides to produce salt whose names end in sulfate
What ion is present in nitric acid?
NO3
Nitric acid contains hydrogen ion(like all acids) but it also contains NO3 ion. This is called nitrate ion and is present in any nitrate salt
Zinc oxide + nitric acid
Zinc nitrate + water
Which two chemicals could you react to make ammonia chloride?
Ammonium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid
Calcuim carbonate + hydrochloric acid
Calcium chloride + water + carbondioxide
Calcium chloride is made because hydrochloric acid was used. Water n carbon dioxide are the other products in a reaction of an acid with a carbonate .
Which of these salt is most likely to he soluble ?
Potassium nitrate
Potassium nitrate is soluble in water because all potassium salts are soluble and all nitrates are also soluble
What is the name of the precipate made from the reaction between sliver nitrate and sodium chloride?
Sliver chloride
Sliver chloride is insoluble so its produced as precipitate in this reaction
When producing a soluble salt in a reaction between an acid and an alkali, how can you prepare dru solid crystals from the solution ?
Evaporating the water from the solution by heating it will leave behind crystals of the salt . Filtration is used to separate insoluble solids from liquids
When perfoming an acid alkali titration, what piece of apparatus is ised to place a fixed volume of the first solution in to the conical flask ?
Pipette
A pipette is used to put a fixed volume (usually 25 cm cubed) in to conical flask before adding the indicator
When processing titration results what do you do with results that are very close together?
Take n average
What is indicator ?
Indicators are used to determine whether a solution is a acidic or alkaline .
How salt is made ?
Acid reacts with metal, bases and carbonates to produce salt
What is neutralisation
Neautralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base
Whats the ph scale of acid
Acidic solution have ph values less than 7
