Making polymers Flashcards
Recall the two elements chemically combined in a
hydrocarbon:
carbon and hydrogen
what are polymers?
large molecules made when many monomers (small molecules) join together
what are alkenes and alkanes?
hydrocarbons
how is a hydrocarbon compound formed?
formed between carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms only
what are alkanes?
hydrocarbons which contain a double covalent bond(s) between carbon atoms
what does a double bond contain?
2 shared pairs of electrons
Describe how the reaction with bromine can be used
to test for an alkene:
- bromine water is orange
• bromine water is decolourised.
Describe addition polymerisation
a process in which many alkene monomer molecules react together to give a polymer which requires high
pressure and a catalyst.
Describe a saturated compound
contains only single covalent bonds between carbon
atoms.
Describe an unsaturated compound
contains at least one double covalent bond between
carbon atoms.
what is needed to force monomers to join together?
high pressure and a catalyst
properties of polymers with weak intermolecular forces?
low melting point stretched easily (as chains can slide)
properties of polymers with strong intermolecular forces?
high melting point
cannot be stretched,
rigid (as chains can’t slide)
