Making a reaction go faster-Part 3 Flashcards
a catalyst is a substance that
increases the rate of a chemical reaction but is chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction
a heterogeneous catalyst is
one that is in a different phase to that of the reactants
a catalyst works by
providing an alternative route for the reaction which has a lower activation energy than the original route
a reaction profile diagram is
an extension of an enthalpy level diagram which also shows the activation energy for the reaction
for an endothermic reaction, the reactants on a reaction profile diagram will be positioned……………..than the products
lower than the products
for a catalysed reaction, the reaction profile diagram has
a lower activation energy curve
the two major economic advantages of using catalysts are:
- they increased the rate of reaction meaning more product can be made in the given time period
- reactions can take place at lower temperatures resulting in a decrease in the energy costs to the manufacturer
in the Haber process,……………………………..is used as a heterogeneous catalyst
iron
in the contact process ,……………………………is used as a heterogeneous catalyst
vanadium (V) oxide
a solid catalyst works by
providing a surface on which the gas molecules can absorb and then react, then desorb as product molecules
