majour systems of the body Flashcards
what are the majour systems of the body related to dentistry?
circulatory system
respiration system
Digestive system
The nervous system
what is the circulatory system made up of?
The circulatory system is made up of the
heart, (main component)
blood vessels
and the blood.
what does the heart do in the circulatory system?
The heart i transports oxygenated blood (blood containing oxygen) from the lungs to the body tissues
and
transporting deoxygenated blood (blood which does not contain oxygen) from the body tissues to the lungs
where
the waste product carbon dioxide is excreted during the process of breathing out (exhalation).
WHAT ARE THE 3 COMPONENTS OF BLOOD VESSELS?
ARTERIES-
VEINS
CAPILLARIES
What do veins do?
Veins carry deoxygenated blood away from the body tissues to the heart.
Veins contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood.
what is the only vein which does not contain deoxygenated blood but carries oxygenated blood is called?
Pulmonary Vein.
what are Capillaries?
Arteries and veins eventually branch out to become tiny blood vessels called capillaries
one cell thick which allows oxygen to pass through into the body tissues and similarly allows waste carbon dioxide to pass back through from the body tissues
gaseous exchange/external respiration?
Capillaries are one cell thick which allows oxygen to pass through into the body tissues and similarly allows waste carbon dioxide to pass back through from the body tissues. This process is called gaseous exchange and when it happens in the body tissues is known as internal respiration. When gaseous exchange takes place in the lungs it is known as external respiration.
how many litres of blood is contained within the entire circulatory system and in a healthy adult
5 litres
what is the temperature of the blood in the circulatory system?
37 degrees C
There are 3 types of blood cells which are contained within fluid called plasma?
Red blood cells are called Erythrocytes and are produced in the bone marrow.
White blood cells are called Leucocytes and their function is to protect the body against disease
Platelets are called Thrombocytes and their role is involved in the clotting (coagulation) process of the blood
Plasma
All blood cells are contained within fluid called plasma. Plasma contains 90% water, is straw like in colour, and as well as transporting the three types of blood cells it also transports other substances and chemicals to areas of the body where they are needed. For example plasma transports the protein fibrinogen to areas of injury to aid clotting.
Disorders of the circulatory system relevant to the dental team?
Blood disorders Anaemia Sickle cell disease Heart disorders Heart valve disease Medications
circulatory system
heart pumps blood to blood vessels
blood vessels are arteries, veins, capillaries which pump around the body to remove waste.
what are red blood cells called
Erythrocytes
