Association for Legal Professionals (NALS)
- initially stood for National Association of Legal Secretaries
- oldest national association in the country
- more than 4,000 paralegals and legal secretaries in 100+ chapters
- offers voluntary certification examination (PP, Professional Paralegal)
American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE)
- established 1981
- national organization serving paralegal education and institutions that offer paralegal education programs
Association of Legal Administrators (ALA)
- improve the quality of management in legal services organizations, promote and enhance competence and professionalism of legal administrators and all members of the management team
- represent professional legal management and managers to the legal community and the community at large
State Bar Association
- issues guidelines on proper use of paralegals by attorneys
- issues ethical opinions that apply a state’s ethics code to an attorney’s use of a paralegal
- followed the lead of the ABA and allowed paralegals to become associate or affiliate members
