Major ligaments of the hip Flashcards
1
Q
What are the major ligaments of the hip?
A
- Inguinal ligament
- Iliofemoral ligament
- Pubofemoral ligament
- Ishiofemoral ligament
- Ligamentum teres
- Transverse acetabular ligament
2
Q
What are the functions of the Inguinal ligament
A
- forms base of inguinal canal
- marks the superior boarder of the inguinal triangle
- supports the muscle running inferior to its fibers (iliopsoas, pectineus) as well as femoral artery, femoral vein and femoral nerve
3
Q
What are the functions of the Iliofemoral ligament
A
- reinforces anterior surface of the articular capsule of the hip joint
- prevents hip extension and hip
4
Q
What are the functions of the Pubofemoral ligament
A
- reinforces the inferior and anterior capsule of the hip
- limits excessive extension, abduction and external rotation
5
Q
What are the functions of the Ischiofemoral ligament
A
- reinforce posterior articular capsule of the ip
- Limits internal rotation
6
Q
What are the functions of the Ligamentum teres
A
- contains the acetabular branch of the obturator artery to supply the head and proximal neck of the femur
- Taut in excessive hip adduction, flexion and external rotation
7
Q
What is the function of the transverse acetabular ligament
A
Prevents inferior displacement of the head of the femur
