Major Events In Vertebrate History Flashcards
When did vertebrates evolve?
~500,000,000 years ago
What are conodonts?
Pre-vertebrates
• Eyes, gills, mineralised skeletal elements
• First known 485mya but must have been earlier
What result did whole genome duplications have?
Extra copies that evolution can act on
-> Hox genes
Describe a craniate
- True neural crest and placodes
- Skull
- Paired eyes
- Ears
- Nose
What living pronto-vertebrates exist?
Hagfish and lampreys
Describe jawed-vertebrates
- Jaws
- Paired pectoral and pelvic fins
- True teeth
- Mineralised skeleton
- Complete vertebrae
What three parts is the skill made up of?
- Dermal bones
- Cartilage bones surrounding brain and sense organs
- Viscerocranium- develops from original gill skeleton
When was the evolution of jaws and paired fins?
430mya
What happened to ancestral craniate gills?
- Lost one/two anterior pairs of gills
- First of remaining-> mandibular arch (jaws)
- Second-> hyoid arch (hyoid apparatus/stapes)
Describe lobe fins
Muscular fins with central axis, accessory air breathing organs
What fish today have lobe fins?
Lungfish and coelacanths
Describe a tetrapod
Limbs with digits
Transition to land
How many digits do frogs have?
4
How do digits differ from fin rays?
Digits are endochondral bone, fin rays are dermal bone
Describe a land tetrapod
- Jointed fore and hind limbs
- Middle ear
- Lung breathing
- Waterproof Skin
- Water conserving kidneys
Describe an amniote
- Amniote egg with chorion
- Amnion
- Allantois
Only evolved once- all descendants are amniotes
How do mammals differ from reptiles?
- Diphyodont dentition- two generations of teeth
- Heterodont dentition- different teeth, different function
- Bony secondary palate- separate air and food
- Single lower jaw bone
- Dentary-squamosal jaw joint (reptiles have only quadrate-articular=mammal eat)
- Three ear ossicles- stapes, incus, malleus (reptiles one)
- Larger brain and skill vault, fur and mammary glands, upright stance
What caused the first major extinction?
Massive lava flows in Siberia raised CO2 and other gases-> global warming and acid rain
What caused the second major extinction?
Massive asteroid (10km) hit Earth in Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico
When did mammals enter the air?
53mya
When did mammals re enter the water?
50mya
When were the first recognisable primates?
55mya
When did chordates evolve?
540mya
When did craniates evolve?
530mya
When did jawed vertebrates evolve?
435mya
When did lobe fins evolve?
420mya
When did tetrapods evolve?
390mya
When did frogs and salamanders diverge?
From tetrapods- 390mya
When did amniotes evolve?
320mya
When did reptile and bird lineages diverge?
From amniotes- 320mya
When was the first major extinction?
250mya
When was the evolution of mammalian characters?
320-205mya
When did true mammals evolve?
205mya
When was the second major extinction?
66mya
From when did mammals start to diversify?
64mya
