Maintenance (fluids) Flashcards
What are the 5 steps for inspecting engine oil:
1) engine off
2) vehicle must be on level ground
3) remove the dipstick and wipe it clean
4) reinsert the dipstick fully and remove it again
5) oil level should be at the full mark
-if it’s at the add mark, add 1 liter of engine oil
What are common oil change intervals? (kms)
Engine oil change intervals vary from 5,000km to 12,000km
What is engine coolant a mixture of and in what percentages?
50% distilled water, 50% anti freeze
What are the two tools for checking Engine coolant?
1) Hydrometer
-coolant should be clear, not cloudy
2) Refractometer
-use the ethelyen glycol side
What is the range for coolant replacement? (yrs)
Between 2 and 11 years, depending on vehicle and coolant used.
What is the acceptable reading for engine coolant acidity? (mV)
Less than 400mV is acceptable (<400mV)
If it is more than 400mV it is too acidic
Is there a different measure of ATF if the engine is hot or cold?
Yes! Level should be at the full mark if the engine is warmed up or at the add mark if it is cold
Approximate replacement for ATF how many kms?
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) should be replaced every ~50,000km
Brake fluid should be the colour of this common juice
What is, apple juice
What are the 2 types of brake fluid used?
DOT 3 and DOT 4
How often should Brake Fluid be replaced?
Every 2 years, regardless of colour or # of kms
What is the percentage level of moisture in brake fluid to necessitate a replacement?
3% or greater
When checking Differential oil, which plug for you use to check fluid level?
The top most plug (Oil level and inspection plug)
The bottom plug is the drain plug and is used only when replacing
What is the purpose of an oil filter?
Removes metal particles and debris
