Why did the FRG face increasing strains from the mid 1960s?

- Relations deteriorated with East Germany - construction of Berlin Wall in 1961
- Economy did not grow as strongly due to this

- Formed a coalition with the FDP after 1974, tensions developed between the two parties
- Schmidt faced difficulties in dealing with inflation - lost a vote of no confidence in 1982

- Worked to develop European integration with the EEC
