Camera shots, Camera movements, Mis-en-scene, editing, lighting sound and props
Camera shots
Music videos generally feature similar sequences of shots (mid shots, log shots, close ups)
How do camera shots help create meaning?
They emphasise the mis-en-scene, emotions of characters, and establish the genre
Camera movements
Different shot types useful for when producers want the audience to either feel as part of the story or emphasise emotions of the character/artist
Mis-en-scene
Creates symbolism for audience to interpret - symbols created through use of props, location, characters and sound effects
Editing
Fast paced editing ( in genres like pop, grime) slow paces (in genres like indie) in order to create disclosure to the genre , editing helps maintain entertainment of the audience and stop them getting bored
Lighting
Bright, vibrant colours connotes positivity , black and white connotes sad atmosphere and sorrow
Sound
Main sound in music videos = vocals, there are some cases in which sound is used through narration of a short film
Props
Props help create a stronger atmosphere to the setting and genre
