Mains Electricity And Safety Flashcards
What is AC?
Alternating current, current that changes direction
What is DC?
Direct current, only flows in one direction
How does a direct current look on an oscilloscope?
Straight line
How does alternating current look on an oscilloscope?
Wavey
What is the period on an oscilloscope?
The length of time for one complete wave to pass
How do we work out with the period?
Multiply the amount of scale divisions, by the scale decision seconds
What three wires are within the three pin plug?
Earth wire, live wire, and the neutral wire
Which two wires are responsible for carrying the electrical supply to and from the mains supply?
Live and neutral
What colour is the earth wire?
Green and yellow
What colour is the neutral?
Blue
What happens if the live wire comes into contact with the metal case?
Electric shock
How is the electric shock prevented?
The earth wire takes the current from the live wire and the high current is prevented by the fuse
What happens the a fuse if it exceeds too high current?
Melts
