Mains Electricity Flashcards
What is the movement of electrons in a alternating current?
The electrons shunt back and forth, changing direction.
What does DC stand for?
Direct current
Which side of the battery do electrons move from and to?
From the negative to the positive side of the battery.
What is the movement of electrons in a direct current?
The electrons move in one direction around the circuit.
What colour is the earth wire?
Green and yellow
What colour is the neutral wire?
Blue
What are cables made of?
Flexible plastic
What is the mains frequency?
50Hz
Why do appliances with metal cases have a three core wire?
They contain an earth wire which prevents the case becoming love and electrocuting someone.
Why are the pins brass?
Brass is a good conductor
What must the cables be connected to in the plug?
The correct terminal
What should the rating on fuses be?
It should be higher than the normal working current for the appliance.
What is a circuit breaker?
An electromagnetic switch which cuts off the supply if the current is too big.
What colour is the live wire?
Brown
What does AC stand for?
Alternating current
What are the disadvantages of fuses?
- Do not respond instantly
* Has to be replaced when blown.
How to calculate power of an appliance
P= I x V
Power= Current(A) x Potential difference/voltage(V)
Why are cables different sizes?
They are used for different purposes. The thicker the cable, the more current is carried.
What does a RCCB do?
It detects a difference of current between the live and neutral wired and breaks the circuit
What is electrical power?
The energy transferred to a device each second.
What is an electric current?
The rate of flow of charge
What happens in a resistor?
Electrical energy is transferred making the resistor hotter
What are some electrical dangers?
- Electrical faults can cause electric shocks and fires
- Overloading sockets is a fire risk
- Don’t touch bare wires or terminals more than 30V
What is a fuse?
It contains a thin wire which melts if too much current passes through it, cutting off the current.
