anything that is not within the authors view point but they are quoting what someone else or group of people believes.

Steps to for common pattern 1
- Start with the alternate viewpoint (might have a premise)
- author comes in with a rebuttal.
The Rebuttal is THE MAIN POINT!
Wherever the author is disagreeing at is the main point - Read authors premises in support of his rebuttal

Start with the main point broad statement
a series of premises building on one another
subsidiary conclusion (with a conclusion indicator word)
be aware of
subsidiary conclusion not being the real conclusion its a trap but, don’t forget the first sentence. Because the first sentence sometimes is the conclusion. So always go back to the top and then do the because test.
Steps for main point question
- look for alternative viewpoints and indicator words
- If there is an alternative viewpoint then, the Main point us where the author directly responds (90% of the time disagreeing)
- if there is no alternate viewpoint, start breaking down the relationships of support using indicator words and Because test
- Identify the piece of the text that is the Main point
- Correct answer is a restatement of this
