Main Ideas Flashcards
An object in motion can….
Speed Up
Slow Down
Change Direction
What causes an object to speed up, slow down or change direction?
Forces on the object
List 7 factors that can influence how much friction occurs between two surfaces.
- Roughness of the surface
- Shape of the object
- Weight of the object
- Texture of the object
- Any use of lubrication
- Surface area
- Speed of the object
Solids are not the only materials that can cause friction. Name 2 other types of friction.
Air resistance
Water resistance
Name three examples of non-contact forces.
Gravity
Electric forces
Magnetic forces
How many forces typically act on an object?
Two
Most objects experience both a push and pull force.
What makes two or more opposite forces balanced?
If two forces of equal strength act on an object in opposite directions, the forces will cancel, resulting in a net force of zero and no movement.
What makes forces unbalanced?
If one force is stronger than the other, the forces are unbalanced. Unbalanced forces cause a change in motion; speed or direction.
What is the formula to find the force of an object?
F = M x A
Force = Mass x Acceleration
What is the formula to find the average speed of an object?
S = d➗t
Speed = Distance➗ Time
What is Newton’s First Law of Motion?
An object in motion will stay in motion. An object at rest will stay at rest.
What is Newton’s Second Law of Motion?
Part One: The greater the mass of an object, the smaller its change in motion will be for a given force.
Part Two: The greater the force applied, the greater the change in motion for a given mass.
What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
When an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts a force on the first.
The force of attraction between two objects.
Gravity
List three ways that an object can accelerate.
Speed Up
Slow Down
Change Direction
