- an outlet for surplus population
- a prestige for the mother country

the july crisis 1914
A
- period of bluff, threat and negotiation between European powers following the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand
- austria-hungary blamed serbian government for assassination. with support of germany, austria issued 10 demands and serbia only accepted 9. serbia was promised the protection of russia from austria-hungary and germany.

schlieffen plan
A
germany quickly attacked france by going around it through belgium. once defeated, they would attack russia. the plan did not work and germany ended up fighting the war on two fronts simultaneously.
