Main Flashcards
Which engineering field is responsible for preventing erosion?
Coastal Engineer
What is added to concrete to reinforce it and provide strength against tensile stress?
Steel reinforcements (rebars)
Is wood isotropic or anisotropic?
Anisotropic
Name a type of corrosion
Localised Corrosion (Pitting, Crevice Corrosion, Filiform)
Galvanic Corrosion
Environmental Cracking
General Attack Corrosion
How is 3D-printed buildings more cost-effective than regular buildings?
Less Workers
Requires less material (additive process)
Cheaper materials because they are have a shorter lifespan
What is the relationship between shear and bending?
Local maximum of shear occurs at local minimum of bending, vice versa
Bending is the area under a shear force diagram
What are the Life Cycle Stages?
- Mining/Extraction/Harvesting
- Manufacturing
- Construction
- Use/Maintenance
- Demolition
Which of these materials have the highest recycle content? Steel Glass Concrete Wood
Glass
How does using wood as a material impact CO2 emissions?
Trees transpirate, absorbing CO2. By cutting down trees, it allows more CO2 to stay in the atmosphere
Any CO2 originally in the wood will be stored during use
Manufacturing and cutting requires less CO2 than other materials
At what stage does concrete cause the most CO2 emissions?
Cement is heated in a furnace to produce cement clinker through the thermal decomposition of CaCO3. This heating causes it to be the 3rd largest man-made producer of CO2
Why is wrought iron now obsolete?
Not very machinable or workable
Poor in high temperatures (fires)
What happens to concrete over time?
Increases in strength
Shrinks (creeps)
What is concrete comprised of?
Sand
Aggregate
Cement
Water
Are masonry, stone and cement strong in tension or compression?
Compression
What types of structures are made of stone?
Arches, Piers, Abutments, etc. (compression members)
