मृगस्य वचनानि श्रुत्वा पाण्डुः दुःखेन अचिन्तयत् कथम् म्म् पुत्राः भविष्यन्ति इति ।
Having heard the deer’s words Pāṇḍu thought, unhappily, “How will I have any sons?”
पुरा तु यदा कुन्ती कन्या तदा ऋषिः तस्यै कम् अपि मन्त्रम् अददात् ।
But long ago when Kuntī was a girl then a sage gave her a certain mantra.
तेन मन्त्रेण कः चन देवः तुभ्यम् पुत्रम् दास्यति इति ऋषिः अवदत् ।
The sage said “A certain
god will give you a son by means of a mantra.”
सूर्यम् चिन्तयित्वा कुन्ती मन्त्रम् अवद्त् ।
Kuntī, having thought of the sun, spoke the mantra.
सूर्यः ताम् आगम्य तस्यै पुत्रम् अददात् ।
Having come to her the sun gave her a son.
सः पुत्रः कर्णः नाम ।
The son was named Karṇa.
सः तु कुन्त्या त्यक्तः ।
But he was abandoned by
Kuntī.
एवम् पञ्च पुत्राः मन्त्रेण जाताः ।
In this way five sons were born by mantra.
तेषाम् जनकाः देवाः ।
Their fathers were gods.
ते युधिष्ठिरः भीमः अर्जुनः नकुलः सहदेवः च ।
They were Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva
