Q

what is the difference between FMRI and MRI?

A

FMRI looks at the brain and its blood flow to see activity in the brain
MRI looks at only the structure

20
Q

what were the two scanning techniques done after the MRI ?

A

VBM
pixel counting

21
Q

what is VBM

A

it is a statistical tech used to measure grey matter within the brain

22
Q

how does VBM work

A

it works by dividing the brain into 3D units and comparing grey matter differences between groups e.g TD and NTD

23
Q

what is pixel counting

A

it is a more manual way instead of looking at the whole brain they just look at the hippocampus

24
Q

how is pixel counting carried out

A

a specialist blind to participants
counted pixels making up the hippocampus
in a mri scan to estimate its volume
to compare anterior posterior and the hippocampus (inside and out)

25
participants
-taxi drivers 16 right handed male london taxi drivers age 32-62 mean age of 44 all men had taxi drivers for atleasr 1.5 years mean time as a taxi driver - 14.3 years range - 1.5-42 years alll were healthy -non taxi drivers 50 right handed males age 32-62 who had been scanned for the MRI database no one with health problems was included
26
procedure
structural mri scans were obtained from both taxi drivers and non 2. two image analysis methods were used to analyse the data/scans VBM identifies the grey matter in different parts of the brain pixel counting - 2D model specialist counts pixels this identifies the volume of the hippocampus -the specialist was blind to whether the participant was a taxi driver or not 3. comparison were made between the findings from the scans of the taxi driver and those of non taxi drivers
