Lancet 2002
Incl criteria:
BP >140/90 on 2 readings + protein 1+ antepartum or within 24hrs postpartum and clinical uncertainty if MgSO4 needed – randomised to:
- MgSO4
- Placebo
Exclusion: hypersensitive, myasthenia graves

Primary outcome:
- Eclampsia [0.8% vs 1.9%; 58% lower risk with 11 fewer cases/1000 women; NNT 91]
- Maternal mortality [Trend towards dec - 0.2% vs 0.4%; p = 0.11; RR 0.55]
- NND [no diff but dec in placental abruption – 2% vs 3.2%; RR 0.67 12 fewer cases/1000 women]

- Toxicity
- SEs (25% got SEs)
- If randomised before birth – also labour complications and NN morbidity
