magnification and resolution Flashcards
what is the formula for magnification?
magnification = size of image/ size of real object (actual size)
what is the mag formula triangle
image size on the top
actual size and mag on the bottom
AIM
what are the unit conversions?
1000 nm = 1 µm
1000 µm = 1 mm
1000 mm = 1 m
10 mm = 1 cm
what is actual size usually measured in?
micrometre.
um
what are internal cellular structures usually measured in?
nanometres
nm
what is the rule for magnification calculations?
all measurements must have the same units.
larger units to smaller units= multiply
smaller units to larger units= divide.
magnification does NOT have units.
what is magnification?
the number of times larger an image is than the actual object.
how is the magnification of a light microscope calculated?
multiplying the eyepiece lens magnification and the objective lens magnification.
what is resolution?
the ability to distinguish 2 separate points on an image as 2 separate objects.
the higher the resolution…. the
the shorter the distance at which the 2 objects can be clearly distinguished.
what limits resolution in a light microscope and how.
wavelength of light.
because the closer the structures are, the more the light waves overlap as they are diffracted.
* points that are closer together than half the wavelength of visible light cannot be clearly distinguished from eachother.
why is resolution higher in electron microscopes?
because electrons have a smaller wavelength than visible light.
COMPARISON POINTS for a 6 marker on light and electron microscopes.
