Magnification and Resolution Flashcards
what is a pixel
the smallest unit of an image on a television or computer screen
the higher the pixel density per given area…
…the clearer the image
what is magnification
it refers to how much larger an image appears compared to the original object
what is resolution
allows you to distinguish between two objects. it shows them as separate objects.
when is resolution the best
when the distance separating the object is small. it affects the degree to which detail is retained in the magnified image
what is the resolving power of the naked eye
0.1 mm apart
what is the resolving power of a microscope
0.2 micrometers apart
what is resolving power
the ability of an optical instrument or type of film to separate or distinguish small or closely adjacent images
how does resolving power help
it indicates the level of detail actually observed in the specimen
what does it mean if the microscope has a low frequency
it has a large wavelength so it has a poor resolution
what does it mean if the microscope has a high frequency
it has a short wavelength so it has a good resolution
what is a photomicrograph
a photograph of the image seen through a microscope
what do photomicrographs often have
magnification bars or scale bars to allow calculation of the actual size of the specimens
what does a light microscope use
uses lenses to project a magnified image of an object onto the eye
how to calculate magnification
magnification = image/actual
