Magnets and Magnetic Fields Flashcards
How many poles do magnets have?
2, North and South
What is a Magnetic Field?
A region where magnetic materials experience a force
What are magnetic field lines?
They are used to show the size and direction of magnetic fields. They always point from North to South.
How do you create a uniform field between 2 magnets?
Place North and South poles of 2 permanent bar magnets near each other.
How to identify magnetic field patterns?
With compasses or iron filings
How to use compasses to see magnetic field patterns?
Use multiple compasses to see magnetic field lines coming out of a bar magnet or between 2 bar magnets.
How to use iron filings to see magnetic field patterns?
Put magnet(s) under a piece of paper, scatter iron filings ontop of paper, tap until they form a clear pattern.
What do magnets affect?
Magnetic material and other magnets
Like poles … and opposite poles …
Like poles repel
Opposite poles attract
What are both poles still attracted to?
Magnetic material
Wht happens when magnetic materials are brought near to a magnet?
that material acts as a magnet
What is the magnetism in the material induced by?
The original magnet
What happens when you move the magnet and the material closer to each other?
The stronger the induced magnetism will be
