Magnets Flashcards
What are magnets ?
any material that attracts iron and material that contain iron
How were magnets discovered ?
by ancient Greeks, when they dug up a rock called magnetite
Property of Magnet
attract iron and materials containing iron
Property of Magnet
attract or repel other magnets
Property of Magnet
one of the a magnet will always point north when allowed to swing freely
Property of Magnet
has 2 poles/ ends
- magnetic effect is strongest at poles
- poles that are alike repel each other
- poles that are opposite attract each other
Magnetic Force
the attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles
push or pull that causes objects to move
Magnetic Field
strongest at the poles BUT not limited to the poles
Magnetic Field
magnetic force that is exerted all around a magnet
Because of magnetic fields, magnets can interact
without even touching
Magnetic field lines
are lines that map out the invisible magnetic field around a magnet
Magnetic field lines
- spread out from one pole, curved around the magnet, and return to the other pole
- form complete loops from pole to pole and NEVER crosses
- ALWAYS leave north pole and enter south pole
- CLOSER THE LINES ARE THE STRONGER THE FIELD
- closest together at poles
