Q

what are field lines?

A

Used to represent a magnetic field.

They are drawn to show the direction and strength of the magnetic field.

The field lines always go from the north pole and to the south pole.

The closer together the field lines are the stronger the magnetic force.

Q

what is a magnetic field?

A

All magnets have a magnetic field around them – it is the area where the magnetic force is exerted.

If another magnet or a magnetic material is in this field it will ‘feel’ a magnetic force.

Q

How can we tell the difference between a magnet and magnetic material?

A

Magnetic materials are always attracted towards a magnet. However, a magnet may be attracted to or repelled from another magnet.

Q

what happens if two north poles are placed next to each other?
