Magnets Flashcards
what is a magnet?
object that will attract magnetic materials. It will also attract or repel other magnets
attract…
two objects move towards each other due to a non-contact force (magnetism)
repel…
two objects move away from each other due to a non-contact force (magnetism)
pole…
magnet has a north and south pole.
The ends of a magnet
what is magnetic material?
Magnetic material are material that are influenced/attracted by a magnet
examples of magnetic material…
iron
cobalt
nickel
steel
etc…
what are field lines?
Used to represent a magnetic field.
They are drawn to show the direction and strength of the magnetic field.
The field lines always go from the north pole and to the south pole.
The closer together the field lines are the stronger the magnetic force.
what is a magnetic field?
All magnets have a magnetic field around them – it is the area where the magnetic force is exerted.
If another magnet or a magnetic material is in this field it will ‘feel’ a magnetic force.
How can we tell the difference between a magnet and magnetic material?
Magnetic materials are always attracted towards a magnet. However, a magnet may be attracted to or repelled from another magnet.
what happens if two north poles are placed next to each other?
they will repel as the field lines will not join but instead move away
what happens if two south poles are placed next to each other?
they will repel as the field lines will not join but instead move away
what happens if one south pole and one north pole are placed next to each other?
they will attract as the field lines will join together/move towards each other
