Magnets Flashcards
Describe the difference between a contact and a non-contact force
Contact force- objects have to touch. Non-contact force- acts from a distance
State whether magnetism is a contact or a non-contact force
Non-contact
Define the term ‘permanent magnet’
a material that produces its own magnetic field
Define the term ‘induced magnet’
a material that becomes a magnet when it is placed in a magnetic field
State the four magnetic materials
iron, steel, cobalt and nickel
State what will happen when two like poles interact
repel
State what will happen when two opposite poles interact
attract
State where the magnetic force is strongest around a bar magnet
at the poles
Explain why the magnetic field strength is greatest at the poles
there are more magnetic field lines and they are closer together
Describe what a uniform magnetic field is.
same strength and same direction
Explain why the earth has a magnetic field
the movement of iron in the liquid outer core
Describe the shape of the Earth’s magnetic field
same as a bar magnet
State what direction compasses point
geographic north but magnetic south
Explain how compasses can be used as evidence for the Earth’s magnetic field
The compass needle points in the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field.
