Magnetism Test Flashcards
What is the definition of Magnetism?
The force of attraction ( come together) or repulsion (pull part) between the pole of a magnet and another object.
True or False? Every magnet has a North and South Pole?
True
Where is the force of attraction the greatest?
At the poles ( when the atoms are lined up)
Where is the force of attraction the weakest?
In the middle.
True or false? Opposite poles attract.
TRUE
True or False? Like poles repel ( push away).
TRUE
True or false? Iron, Nickel, Cobalt, and magnetite are magnetic?
True
What happens when you hit or use extreme heat on a magnet?
It will disrupt the atoms therefore destroying the magnet.
True or false? When a magnet s broken, the new magnet will each have a North and South pole but they will be weaker.
True
What do closer magnets create?
A stronger magnetic force.
What is the magnetic field?
It is the invisible lines of force that surround a magnet from one pole to the next.
What is the magnetic compass?
It contains a magnet that interacts with the earth’s magnetic field. It aligns itself to point to the magnetic poles.
What is an electrical circuit?
A network consisting of a closed loop, giving a return path for the current.
( a complete path through which electrical charges can flow)
What is an electric current?
A flow of a charge through a material
What is an ampere?
A unit of an electric current.
What is a conductor?
Allows electricity to flow easily ex: copper, iron, aluminum, gold metal.
What is an insulator?
Do not allow electricity to flow easily thru it. Ex: wood, rubber, plastic, glass.
A substance can have the following 6 things:
-A positive charge ( proton)
-A negative charge ( electron)
-No Charge ( neutron)
-Opposite electrical charges will attract each other.
-Similar electrical charges will repel each other.
-Charges look to neutralize each other or become neutral.
What are 3 reasons someone might get shocked when touching something?
- when a static charge has accumulated ( builds up) on an objet, the object wants to become neutral.
-If an object with an opposite charge is close, a static discharge occurs.
-This transfers its charge into another object in order to become neutral.
Examples: carpets, dryer, lightening ( discharge of electricity).
Why does lightening occur?
-Lightening is the extreme form of static discharge.
-Negative & positive charges separate in a cloud.
-A discharge from negative to positive occurs ( an example of static electricity).
-The negative charge in the cloud meets the positive charge on he ground and a lightning bolt occurs.
