Magnetism, Force, Gravity and Sinking and Floating Flashcards
What is a FORCE?
A force is a push, pull, twist or turn in motion
What are the effects on FORCE
It will either speed up the object, slow it down, stop it or the object may change direction
What is the difference between CONTACT and NON CONTACT forces?
Contact forces are forces that require direct physical contact between two objects while non contact forces do not require direct physical contact
What is MAGNETISM?
Magnetism is the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other, is also an invisible force and a non contact force
What is the greatest strength of a MAGNET?
The greatest strength of a magnet is the South Pole and the North pole
What is GRAVITY?
Gravity is the non contact force which pulls objects to the center of the earth also you cannot see gravity but you can observe it’s affects on objects
Does the material from which an object its made changes its shape and size change the fact that it can sink or float? Why?
Yes, because the volume of the object
Can heavy objects float if they have a different shape? Why?
Yes, because the buoyant force will be equal to the force exerted downwards by the object among other factors and the object will float
If you push an air filled object down in water will it stay down? Why?
No, because air is much less dense than water. This is a big reason why ships are able to float
What is the difference between a balanced force and an unbalanced force?
A balanced force is when a force is balanced and no movement takes place on the other hand an unbalanced force takes place in the direction of the stronger force
What is FRICTION and why is it important?
Friction is a force that resists motion when one object comes intact with another it is important to stop things from moving
What is ENERGY?
Energy is the ability to do work, for example, there is light energy, heat energy, chemical energy, sound energy and mechanical energy
What is the difference between POTENTIAL and KINETIC energy?
Potential energy is stored while kinetic energy is energy in motion
What is CONDUCTION?
Conduction is the process by which heat energy is transferred from the hotter end of an object to the cooler end of an object
What is CONVECTION?
Convection is the transfer of heat through gases and liquids
