Magnetism/compass Flashcards
Where does terrestrial magnetic field emerge from?
Magnetic South Pole and re-enters earth at the magnetic North Pole
Where is dip angle measured?
Between total field and local horizon
What does large and low dip indicate?
LARGE = weak horizontal (H) field and strong vertical (Z)
LOW = strong horizontal (H) and low vertical (Z)
How is magnetic direction measured?
Relative to the local magnetic field horizontal direction (magnetic north)
What is the acceleration error aid?
NANDS
northern hemisphere: accelerating north and decelerating south
What is the turning error aid?
NUNOS
North hemisphere: undershoot north and overshoot south
What is a rate one turn?
3 degrees per second
What causes a/c magnetism?
Soft iron components (temporary, depending on attitude and location)
Hard iron components (permanent)
Electromagnetic components (only when current flows)
What is deviation caused by?
The interaction of the a/c magnetic field and the earths magnetic field
What are the component of the remote reading compass?
Flux detection unit (valve)
Gyro unit
Transducer
Precession amplifier
