Magnetism and the motor effect Flashcards
Give examples of magnetic metals
Iron, nickel, cobalt and steel
What are the rules for north and south poles in magnets?
Opposites attract
Same repel
What is an induced magnet?
A material that is placed in a magnetic field which becomes a magnet itself and stops being a magnet when it’s taken out of the field again
Give examples of where magnets are used
- motors
- generators
- loudspeakers
- door latches
What do close together lines mean in a magnetic field diagram?
The magnetic field is strongest there
How can a magnetic field be found?
Using a plotting compass
What do magnetic field lines show?
The direction in which the magnetic force is acting at a specific point
What magnetic field is the earth’s similar to?
A bar magnet (they have a similar magnetic field shape)
What is the Earth’s magnetic field thought to be caused by?
Electric currents in the molten outer core (made of iron and nickel)
What does a current flowing through a wire cause?
A magnetic field
What does the direction of a magnetic field depend on?
The direction of the current - if the current changes direction, so does the direction of the magnetic field
What does the strength of the magnetic field depend on?
The size of the current - higher the current, stronger the field
Where will a magnetic field be the strongest
Nearest the wire and gets weaker with increasing distance
How can you use a thumbs up to work out the direction of the magnetic field
If you point your thumb in the direction of the current, the direction of your fingers curling round will show the direction of the magnetic field
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire with electricity flowing through it
What is the magnetic field inside a solenoid like?
The lines on a solenoid magnetic field are very close together in the middle of the coil, and so is very strong
What is the magnetic field outside a solenoid like?
One side of the coil tends to balance out the other side of the coil and gives a weaker field outside
What is an electromagnet?
A coil of wire with a current flowing through it
How can the magnetic field of an electromagnet be made stronger?
By putting a piece of iron (iron core) inside the coil and this iron becomes a temporary magnet - it is only a magnet when the electromagnet is affecting it
What is the motor effect?
When a current-carrying wire or coil can exert a force on a permanent magnet
What happens to a current-carrying wire when it’s placed between 2 magnets?
It experiences a force - the current creates a magnetic field around the wire and this interferes with the magnetic field between the magnets
When is the force strongest with a wire between two magnets?
When the wire is at right angles to the magnetic field produced from the magnets `
When is the force weakest with a wire between two magnets?
When the wire is in the same direction as the magnetic field
