Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnetic field?
A region where other magnets and magnetic materials experience a non-contact force.
In what direction do magnetic field lines point?
From North to South
True or false? The force between two unlike poles is attractive.
True
Describe the behaviour of a compass that is far away from a magnet.
Always points north.
True or false? The force between a magnet and a magnetic material is always repulsive.
False
Describe the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire.
Made up of concentric circles perpendicular to the wire.
Why does adding more turns to a solenoid increase the strength of its magnetic field?
The field lines around each loop line up with each other. This results in lots of field lines pointing in the same direction, increasing the strength.
What is an electromagnet?
A magnet whose magnetic field can be turned on and off with an electric current.
Name two ways you could increase the force on a current carrying wire in a magnetic field.
Add an iron core.
Increase the coils of wire.
