magnetism and electromagnetism Flashcards

1
Q

describe how to use a plotting compass to draw a magnetic field (5)

A
  1. place a magnet on paper and draw around it
  2. place the plotting compass near the pole
  3. mark the direction of compass and then remove it and draw an arrow in that direction
  4. place the compass at the end of the previous arrow and repeat
  5. draw at least 3 full lines

Q

how does a loudspeaker work? (6)

A
  1. AC current is constantly changing direction
  2. the current carrying wire is an electromagnet
  3. the wire feels a force from the magnet
  4. the force changes direction which you can see by using Fleming’s left hand rule
  5. this causes vibrations
  6. the magnets are attracted and
repelled, pushing the speaker cone in/out, making vibrations that are heard as sound.

Q

what is electromagnetic induction?

A

The production of a voltage by the

movement of a conductor in a

magnetic field or by the movement

or change in the magnetic field

around a conductor
