Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What happens to a magnetic field when current is increased?
Stronger magnetic field
What happens to a magnetic field when resistance is increased?
Weaker magnetic field
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet that produces its own magnetic field
What is an Induced magnet?
A temporary magnet (becomes magnetic in a magnetic field)
Give three ways to increase the strength of a magnetic field in an electromagnet
- Use larger current
- Uses more turns of wires
- Put turns of wires closer together
- Use iron core in middle
What does thumb represent in the Fleming’s left hand rule?
Direction of movement
What does first finger represent in the Fleming’s left hand rule?
Direction of magnetic field
What does second finger represent in the Fleming’s left hand rule?
Direction of current
What is magnetic flux?
The number of magnetic field lines passing through a given closed surface
What is magnetic flux density?
Number of lines in a given area
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire wound around an iron core.
What does the thumb represent in the Right hand rule?
Direction of current
What do the fingers represent in the Right hand rule?
Direction of magnetic field
