Q

What is the law of attraction and repulsion?

A

If the poles of the magnet are the same, they will repel, if the poles of the magnet are the opposite, they will attract.

Q

What are the rules for drawing magnetic field lines? (x3)

A

The arrow on a field line points from the North pole to the South pole.

Field lines never cross.

They are closer together where the magnetic field is stronger and further apart where the magnetic field is weaker.

Q

How do you create a magnetic field with a metallic conductor?

A

When an electrical current travels along a metallic conductor, e.g. a copper wire, a magnet field is set up in the space surrounding the wire.

Q

How can you tell if current is coming out or into a plane?

A

A circle with a dot shows that the current is coming out from the plane.

A circle with a cross shows that the current is moving into the plane.

Q

How can you find out which end of a solenoid is North and which end is South?

A

You need to view it from the end. If the current is travelling around in a clockwiSe direction, then it is the South end.

If the current is travelling around in an aNticlockwise direction, then it is the North end.

Q

What are the factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet?

A

The strength of an electromagnet can be increased by:

Increasing the number of turns of wire.

Increasing the current.

Making the coils close together.

Winding the turns around an iron core.

Q

What is the method of making an electromagnet and testing how strong it is?

A
  1. Wind a number of turns of wire around a soft iron bar.
  2. Connect the wire to a battery.
  3. Put the electromagnet into a box of drawing pins.
  4. Note the number of pins it can lift.
  5. Switch off and note what happens.
  6. Increase the number of turns of wire and repeat.
