magnetism and electromagnetism Flashcards
what surrounds a magnet
a magnetic field
Describe the two outcomes of when 2 magnets are placed near each other.
They either attract or repel.
Describe where the magnetic force is the strongest.
Near the poles of the magnet.
Describe what permanent magnets are.
Permanent magnets are always magnetic.
Describe what induced magnets are.
Induced magnets are not always magnetic, most of the time they are unmagnetised.
Describe how an induced magnet is made.
When the material is placed inside another magnet’s magnetic field, it acts like a magnet and attracts magnetic materials.
Electromagnets
are temporary magnets produced by an electric current.
A simple electromagnet
solenoid wound round an iron core.
When current passes through it, it magnetises the iron core.
It can be switched on and off because it is a temporary (induced) magnet.
Describe what happens to a wire when current flows through the wire.
The current creates a magnetic field around a wire.
