Magnetism Flashcards
What is a force?
A push or pull that causes a change in motion
What is a force field?
The pattern in space of how that force is felt by other objects
What is magnetism?
The phenomena caused by magnets. It is a force like gravity or the attraction and repulsion of electrostatic charges
How are magnetic field formed?
By the flowing of electrons
What is a magnet?
An object that can attract/repel (exert a force) on other objects containing iron, nickel or cobalt (these 3 metals electrons have the ability to move more freely within the metal)
What materials are magnetic?
Ferromagnetic materials:
- Iron, Cobalt, Nickel
How many poles do magnets have?
What are they called?
2
North and South poles
Where does the North pole of a magnet naturally seek?
Geographic ____
Geographic North
Describe relationships between North and South poles of magnets
North and South=attracted
North and North=repel
South and South= repel
As distance between poles increases, what happens to magnetic force?
It decreases
What causes the Earth’s magnetic field?
Moving molten iron in Earth’s outer core
What does the Earth’s magnetic field protect us from/
It shields us from space radiation
Geographic South is Magnetic what?
Magnetic North
Geographic North is Magnetic what?
Magnetic South
What is an example of the poles effects on the Earth
Aurora’s
Can you isolate a single pole on a magnet?
No
What happens if a magnet is broken into two pieces
It will create two smaller magnets
Describe non-magnetic substances
Not attracted or repelled by a magnet (wood, glass, most materials and elements except Iron, cobalt, and Nickel)
Describe magnetic substances
Attracted or repelled by a magnet
Describe ferromagnetic substances
Attracted by a magnet. It can be magnetized temporarily. Material must contain iron, cobalt, or nickel
Ferromagnetic substances must contain what?
One of the following:
- Iron
- Nickel
- Cobalt
What are magnetic fields?
The space around a magnet where its forces are felt
What can be used to determine the shape of the magnetic field?
Iron fillings
What kind of field are magnetic fields (on a single magnet)?
Dipole (bc 2 poles; North and South)
Which way do lines point in a magnetic field?
Lines point away from North toward South
N–>S
Where do the lines of the magnetic field meet?
The poles
Where is the magnetism strongest?
At the poles
What can compasses be used to determine determine?
The direction of the lines of force/where the poles are
The North end of the compass points to where on a magnet?
The South pole of the magnet (opposites attract)
Do magnetic field lines ever cross each other?
No
