Magnetism Flashcards
Define magnetism
The ability for a object to become a magnet
Name the 4 materials that are naturally magnetic
Iron
Cobalt
Nickle
Steel
How can we if a material is magnetic
If ht object is attracted to a magnet
What are Domains ?
A magnetic domain is a region within a magnetic material in which the magnetisation is in a uniform direction.
What is a bar magnet ?
Bar magnets are permanent magnets. This means that their magnetism is there all the time and cannot be turned on or off.
What are the names of the two poles on a magnet ?
North and South
What happens to a magnet when you put two north poles together ?
They repel
What happens when you put a South pole and North pole together ?
They attract
Define induced magnetism
The process by which a substance, such as iron or steel, becomes magnetised by a magnetic field
Define electromagnetism
Creating a magnet using electricity
Why are electromagnets useful ?
They can be turned on off
What is repulsion ?
Repulsion is the test for a magnet because unmagnetised iron will be attracted to another magnet but it will not be repelled.
What are the units of power
Watts
What is a ferrous alloy ?
An alloy that contains iron
Where is the strongest magnetic field around a bar magnet?
The strongest fields are found around the poles of a bar magnet.
What is the name given to the attraction of unmagnetised iron to a magnet?
The attraction of unmagnetised iron to a magnet is called induced magnetism.
What is another term for substances that can only be temporarily magnetised?
Substances that can only be temporarily magnetised are called soft
Specifically in which direction do the lines run in a field diagram?
The lines run from north to south in a field diagram.
What happens to the magnetic field around an electromagnet when the current is reversed?
When the current surrounding an electromagnet is reversed the current also reverses
What do field line patterns show?
Field line patterns show both the direction and shape of a magnetic field.
