Magnetism Flashcards
What direction does a compass point to
Magnetic south
Why can’t the power company make a solenoid with millions of coils
It becomes harder and harder to move the solenoids and it takes a greater force
Motor or generator?
Loud speaker
Microphone
Toy car
Motor
Generator
Motor
Why does the power company transmit power at a high voltage
Because there is a lower current which means there is less energy lost to heat= save money
Name 3 motors
Toy car Loud speaker Microwave Clock Fan Blender pencil sharpener
How does a simple motor work
There is a wire and a magnet and a current going through the wire which creates a B field around the wire. The magnet is near the wire. Magnet exerts a force on the wire, spinning it. Forces opposes and attract each other creating an alternating current.
How does a generator work
3 examples
Microphone, hydro electric dam, magnetic credit card.
Need a coil of wire, magnet, and source of motion.
Move magnet/ wire which creates a change in the magnetic field and that creates a currents.
Transformer
Transformer uses alternating current
Because the current goes back and forth it changes the B field.
WHEN THE CURRENT IN THE PRIMARY CIRCUIT CHANGES DIRECTIONS IT INDUCES THE CURRENT IN THE SECONDARY CIRUIT. THE AMOUNT OF POWER STAYS THE SAME
Ways to increase current
Number of coils
Strength of magnet
Distance between two
Speed at chich you move the magnet
MAKE MOTOR SPIN FASTER BY
of coils
Two things closer together
Stronger magnet
More current
Why does dropping a magnet affect magnetism
When dropped the domains become misaligned so it becomes unmagnitized
