Magnetism Flashcards
The magnetic effect
Of a magnet is strongest at the two ends called the North Pole and the South Pole
Like poles repel
Each other, unlike poles attract
Magnetic compass
Contains a small magnet balanced on a thin spindle which is free to move. It’s North Pole points north
A magnetic field
Is the space around a magnet where a magnetic force can be seen
Magnetic fields
Can be shown using iron filings or plotting compasses
Magnetic field lines
Go from the North Pole to the South Pole of a magnet
The earth has a magnetic field
As if it had a huge bar magnet at its centre, with the earths South Pole in the northern hemisphere
Magnets are used in
Electronic motors, telephones, loudspeakers, compasses, press and fridge doors, dynamos etc.
Iron, nickel, cobalt or their alloys
Can be magnetised
