Magnetism Flashcards
Magnetic field
Region around a magnet where a force will act on other magnets or on magnetic materials
Uniform magnetic field
Represented by series of straight parallel field lines that are evenly spaced. Strength & direction is same everywhere
Where does compass point & why?
The compass points North because it is lining up with Earth’s magnetic field
Magnetic materials
Materials that are attracted to a magnet when inside its magnetic field, but do not attract or repel each other.
Magnetically hard properties
Can be permanently magnetised & retain magnetism once magnetised
Magnetically soft properties
Can be temporarily magnetised & lose magnetism once removed from magnetic field
Using iron filings
- Use iron filings
- Place a card over the magnets
- Sprinkle iron filings evenly on card
- Tap card to distribute iron filings
Magnetic materials (4)
Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Steel
