Q

what is a magnetic field? (4)

A
  • the area that a magnet affects is called a magnetic field
  • the strength of the magnetic field depends on the distance from the magnet (weaker if the material is further away, stronger if it’s closer)
  • it can be shown using iron filings or plotting compasses
  • magnetic field lines never cross and have direction

Q

fleming’s left hand rule

A
  • when a wire carrying a current is placed in a magnetic field, the magnetic field and the wire exert a force on each other:

THUMB = motion
FIRST FINGER = field
SECOND FINGER = current
