Q

Describe the procedure of detecting a magnetic field with iron fillings

A

Firstly, place a piece of paper on top of a magnet and sprinkle a thin layer of iron fillings over it. Then, tap the paper gently to reveal the pattern

Q

Describe how to plot the magnetic field around a bar magnet using a compass

A

Firstly, place a compass near the end of a magnet and put a mark at the direction it’s pointing to. Then move the compass to that marked point and mark the next one. Repeat the process until the other end and when finished, join the dots by drawing a line to reveal the magnetic field line. You can repeat this starting from other points to get more magnetic field lines

Q

What is a hard magnetic material

A

A hard magnetic material is a material that’s difficult to be magnetizes. However once magnetizes it keeps its magnetic properties. It’s mainly used for permanent magnets
