Magnetism Flashcards
What are the two poles of magnets called
North pole and South pole
What do opposite poles do
Opposite poles attract
What do similar poles do
Similar poles repel
What is a magnetic field
A magnetic field is a region around a magnet where a magnetic material experiences a force
How can detect a magnetic field
Using a compass or using iron fillings
What is a magnetic field line
A magnetic field line is a line that shows the direction of magnetic fields
Give 4 properties of magnetic field lines
Show the shape of a field
Show direction of a magnetic field (From North to South)
Strength of a magnetic field (strongest when magnetic field lines are closest together)
Field lines never cross
Describe the procedure of detecting a magnetic field with iron fillings
Firstly, place a piece of paper on top of a magnet and sprinkle a thin layer of iron fillings over it. Then, tap the paper gently to reveal the pattern
Describe how to plot the magnetic field around a bar magnet using a compass
Firstly, place a compass near the end of a magnet and put a mark at the direction it’s pointing to. Then move the compass to that marked point and mark the next one. Repeat the process until the other end and when finished, join the dots by drawing a line to reveal the magnetic field line. You can repeat this starting from other points to get more magnetic field lines
What is a uniform magnetic field line
A uniform magnetic field line is a field of constant strength where field lines are parallel and equally spaced
How can you produce a uniform magnetic field line
Place the two opposite poles of two permanent magnets close and facing each other
How can you tell whether a magnetic field is strong
If the lines of a magnetic field are close together, then it’s strong
What are magnetic materials
Magnetic materials are materials capable of becoming magnets
Give some examples of magnetic materials
Iron
Nickel
Cobalt
Steel
What is a hard magnetic material
A hard magnetic material is a material that’s difficult to be magnetizes. However once magnetizes it keeps its magnetic properties. It’s mainly used for permanent magnets
