Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Flashcards
How does MRI work?
Radiofrequency transmitter produces an electromagnetic field
This aligns protons within body tissues
After the field is turned off, the protons revert to their original state
The difference between the two energy states, which is released as a photon, is measured
What is Tesla?
International System Unit for the strength of a magnetic field
What is the magnetic field strength of most medical MRI machines?
0.5-3 Tesla
Which structures appear bright, and which appear dark on a T1-weighted MRI?
Fat = bright
Water/fluid appears dark
Which structures appear bright, and which appear dark on a T2-weighted MRI?
Fat = dark
Water/fluid appears bright
What is Weber?
SIU for magnetic flux
