what are modal auxiliary verbs?
a verb that is usually used with another verb to express ideas such as possibility, necessity and permission
examples of modal auxiliary verbs
can, could, shall, ought to, will or would.
what can modal auxiliary verbs show?
possibility, polite requests, necessity, certainty. help convey different meanings in language
what is non standard form?
language that deviates from the accepted standard or formal usage.
examples of non-standard forms
- yeah rather than yes
- ain’t rather than am not
- slang
what can non-standard forms represent?
it can convert familiarity and informality creating a more relaxed and casual tone.
- also can be used for emphasis or to add a sense of authenticity to the conversation.
what are the 4 sentence functions?
declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative
what do declarative sentences show?
state a fact or provide info
what do interrogatives show?
ask a question - engage with reader
what do exclamatives show?
surprise or shock or a strong emotion about something
what do imperatives show?
gives a command to the person being addressed.
